What is a Trademark Class? A Brief Introduction to Trademark Class 17 and Class 20

Trademark Services- Class 17
Trademark Services- Class 17

A trademark is inevitably related with a product, and similarly, a service mark is associated with any service. Therefore, to distinguish a trademark or service mark from other trademarks and service marks, a distinct class is properly assigned to it. Thus, the types or fields of products & goods and services differentiate various trademarks and service marks in any country. The Nice international classification of goods and services, which is recognized in most of the countries worldwide, has classified various products and services into a total of 45 distinct classes. This Nice classification is administered and regularly updated by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). The Nice classification is also immensely convenient for trademark registrations at international levels worldwide.

Thus, a trademark class is nothing but an indication representing a certain economic field of specific goods or services. For an example, the trademark class 17 relates to various rubber goods and products. Hence, to register a trademark which is to be used in the business of any or more rubber products, selected is the trademark class 17 by the applicant for registration purpose in India or abroad.

It may also be just noted here that the registration of a trademark or service mark is made under at least one class of goods or services. One or more associated or coordinated classes may also be used for the purpose of perfect and precise registration of a trademark or service mark.  For further elucidation, one more example is being furnished here.  If a trademark is duly registered under the trademark class 20, then the trademark must be related with any furniture items or decorative objects; as the class 20 of the Nice classification is assigned exclusively to all various furniture goods and decorative objects.
